The Drug Delivery Challenge & NMS Solutions

The chart on the left illustrates the peak-and-trough blood serum levels that result from conventional injection or oral delivery. The high levels may generate toxicity and the low levels generate no activity. Both can lead to side effects.

The simplest drug delivery solution is “zero order” release (middle), or constant delivery over an extended period of time (up to many months). This eliminates peaks and troughs and provides a known consistent dose.

The ultimate drug delivery solution is fully controlled release (right). Here the therapeutic is released however is best for the patient at the moment, including cyclic, on/off, or sensor-regulated.

    First Drug Delivery System (PMDS-1)

NMS will produce a passive , constant release (zero-order) drug delivery device for which the delivery of the drug from a small implantable capsule is controlled by an ultra precise silicon chip containing nanochannel structures that predictably and reliably release drug  molecules  over a period ranging from weeks to months up to a year. The release of molecules by nanochannels can be conceptually envisioned as sand passing through an hour glass.

    PMDS-1 : Fast market entry

    • Passive device
    • Implanted subcutaneously (under the skin)
    • Straightforward pharma product development &  regulatory pathway
    • Capsule features to support other specialty applications

Second Generation (PMDS-2+) The New Pharma®

The follow-on generations of drug delivery systems will be ‘active’  through on-board electronics.  Implants with smart drug release enable new therapeutic models, culminating in an “artificial gland”.
